James G. Walt
First let me explain where the name Grumpsy came from. My grandson started calling me Grumps when he was about 1 year old. By the time he was 3 he enjoyed having me chase him in our back yard and when I couldn't catch him he taunted me with "Grumpsy Grumpsy Grumpsy you can't catch me". Well the name has stuck so why not embrace it? I now brand all my work with the "Handcrafted by Grumpsy" logo.
I came to wood turning after retiring from the pulp and paper industry. I worked here in Trenton, Ontario, Canada for just over 41 years. I have always worked with wood as a hobby and throughout my life wondered about wood turning.
After buying my first lathe and a few tools the fellow threw in, I became addicted to seeing what could be made from wood turning at high speed on a lathe. That first lathe cost me $100 . I have since bought 4 more lathes each one getting more expensive and I can't count the tools that have followed.
I have spent countless hours at the lathe honing my style of turning. This Jan. 2024 I passed the 1000 pieces made and sold since this journey began. I now specialize in more elaborate and artistic styles of turning so I make fewer per year that are more time consuming. I hope you like my work and consider buying one or more of them. My most famous piece was made for CFB Trenton. One of the Maple trees donated by Princess Elizabeth before she was Queen caught a disease and died. I was gifted some of the wood from the tree and made and gifted a bowl and 2 pens to the commanding officers of the base. It now resides in a display at CFB Trenton.
Bowls, both decorative and useful. Urns, keepsake and burial. Vases, both water proof interior and show vases. Fun items such as snow people, funny little birds, honey dippers, bottle toppers. Pepper and salt mills. Wooden pens in many styles.
Commission work using your wood from a family tree. I have finished dozens of these jobs for folks wanting a memento of a fallen tree.
